Veneers can change the colour, shape and proportions of the teeth that show when you smile.
What are Dental Veneers?
Veneers are a popular cosmetic dentistry option used to improve the appearance of teeth that are discoloured, worn, chipped, or misaligned. They are thin shells of porcelain or resin, measuring less than 1.5mm in thickness, that are cemented onto the front surface of the tooth. The process of getting veneers typically involves preparing the tooth, taking an impression, creating a custom veneer at a dental laboratory, and then cementing it in place.
Dental Veneers: A Solution for a Range of Dental Issues
Dental veneers are a great solution for a wide range of cosmetic and structural dental issues, including:
- Minor misalignment
- Uneven teeth
- Teeth discoloration
- Cracked or chipped teeth
- Gaps in teeth
- Wear and tear
The porcelain used in veneers mimics the natural colour of teeth, making them an ideal option for those looking to improve the appearance of their smile.
Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are a cosmetic dental solution that are customized to fit the shape of a patient’s mouth. They are a thin layer of porcelain that is bonded to the front surface of your teeth to improve your smile appearance. They are long-lasting and are maintained like natural teeth.
Flawless Smile with Custom-Fit Porcelain Veneers
Panacea Dental provides porcelain veneers in Waterdown. The procedure may require a patient’s teeth to be filed down slightly before being used and are permanently fixed to their teeth. They are made in an offsite lab and are tailored to fit exactly onto a patient’s teeth. Our dentists can also match the color of the veneers to the shade of your teeth so that they blend with your natural teeth.
Benefits of Porcelain Veneers
Veneers offer several advantages such as:
- Natural tooth appearance
- Colour matching to actual tooth color
- Gum tissue tolerance
- High stain resistance
- Conservative approach to changing tooth color and shape
Veneers are more expensive and time-consuming than bonding, but less expensive than crowns and also conserve the natural tooth.

Porcelain Veneers in Waterdown: Who They Suit
Veneers change the front surface of a tooth. They work well when the problem is how the teeth look rather than how healthy they are: teeth that stay discoloured after whitening, small chips and worn edges, uneven lengths, minor gaps, or teeth that are slightly rotated.
They are a poor choice in some situations, and it is better to know that at the start:
- Heavy grinding or clenching. Porcelain is hard but brittle, and bruxism is a common reason veneers chip. It usually needs managing first, often with a night guard.
- Active decay or gum disease. These are treated before any cosmetic work.
- Large fillings or a weakened tooth. A crown that covers the whole tooth may protect it better.
- Significant crowding or bite problems. Straightening the teeth first can mean less tooth has to be removed, or that veneers are not needed at all.
Porcelain or Composite
Porcelain veneers are made in a dental laboratory. They resist staining, keep their surface polish and usually last longer, but they take two or more visits and cost more.
Composite veneers are built up directly on the tooth in resin, similar to bonding. They are usually done in one visit, often need little or no removal of enamel, cost less and are easier to repair, but they stain and wear faster and need polishing or replacing sooner.
How Porcelain Veneers Are Made
- Consultation. We examine the teeth and gums, take radiographs if needed and talk through what you want to change. If the colour of your other teeth matters, whitening comes first, because veneers are matched to the shade of your teeth at the time and porcelain does not whiten afterwards.
- Preparation. A thin layer of enamel, often under a millimetre, is removed so the veneer sits flush. This part is not reversible, which is why the decision deserves time.
- Impressions and temporaries. Impressions go to the laboratory and temporary veneers protect the teeth while the final ones are made.
- Bonding. The veneers are tried in, checked for fit and colour, then bonded to the teeth and the bite is adjusted.
How Long Veneers Last, and Looking After Them
With care, porcelain veneers commonly last many years, often more than a decade. The things that shorten their life are grinding, biting hard objects such as ice, pens and bottle caps, and decay at the edges where veneer meets tooth. Brush and floss as normal, wear a night guard if you grind, and keep up regular cleanings so the margins stay healthy.
Cost and Insurance
Veneers are usually treated as cosmetic, and most dental plans do not cover them. The Canadian Dental Care Plan does not cover them either. Where a veneer or crown is needed because a tooth is broken rather than for appearance, some plans do contribute, and we can send a predetermination to your insurer so you know before starting. How fees are set is explained on our dental costs and fees page.
