Why is Professional Teeth Cleaning Important?
Plaque that harbours bacteria can develop even when you brush and floss after each meal and before going to bed. Teeth will eventually start to deteriorate, which could cause pain or even partial or complete tooth loss.
What is Plaque and Calculus?
A sticky, white film called plaque is continually forming on your teeth. In plaque, bacteria produce acids that erode teeth and irritate gum tissue. Your body's inflammatory response to this irritation might eventually result in gingivitis and periodontal disease.
Plaque becomes calculus if it is not routinely eliminated by brushing and flossing your teeth (also known as tartar). Only a dentist can get rid of calculus during an oral cleaning; a toothbrush cannot do it. It is crucial to brush your teeth twice a day, floss at least once a day, and visit your dentist for routine cleanings if you want to keep plaque and calculus under control.
Panacea Dental is experienced in performing dental cleaning and we try to make the procedure as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Please call us at 289-408-5100 to schedule an appointment.

Dental Cleaning and Hygiene in Waterdown
A professional cleaning removes what brushing and flossing cannot. Plaque that is left undisturbed hardens into calculus, usually within a couple of days, and once it has hardened it bonds to the tooth surface. No toothbrush removes calculus. It has to be taken off with instruments.
What happens at a cleaning appointment
The visit begins with an examination of the gum tissue, including measuring the depth of the space between gum and tooth. Healthy readings are shallow. Deeper readings indicate the tissue has detached and are the earliest objective sign of gum disease, often well before there is any discomfort.
Calculus is then removed from above and just below the gumline, the teeth are polished to lift surface staining and leave a smooth surface that plaque adheres to less readily, and fluoride may be applied. Where the exam or your history suggests it, radiographs are taken to check between the teeth and below the gumline where decay is not visible directly.
How often should you come?
Six months is a default, not a rule. The right interval depends on how quickly you build calculus, whether you smoke, your medical history and whether you have a history of gum disease. Some people are genuinely fine at nine or twelve months. Others, particularly anyone who has been treated for periodontitis, need three or four month intervals to stay stable. We will tell you which applies to you and why, rather than defaulting everyone to the same number.
Between visits
Cleaning between the teeth matters more than most people expect, because that is where decay and gum inflammation usually begin and it is the one surface a brush cannot reach. Floss, interdental brushes and water flossers all work. The best one is whichever you will actually use daily.
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, spit rather than rinse afterwards so the fluoride stays on the teeth, and be aware that frequency of sugar matters more than quantity. Sipping something sweet across an afternoon keeps the mouth acidic for hours. Our dental articles go into the technique in more detail.
