School-Specific Insurance Guidance
Every school plan is different. Here is how we help you navigate the specifics of your institution's coverage.
McMaster University
MSU & GSA PlansUndergraduates: the MSU Health and Dental Plan is insured by GreenShield from 1 September 2026, replacing the previous provider. Graduate students: the GSA plan is administered by the PBAS Group and pays 70 percent of eligible dental services up to $750 a benefit year. Both plans run from 1 September to 31 August. We can usually submit your claim electronically so you pay only your share.
Mohawk College
MSA PlanThe MSA plan is administered by Alumo, formerly Studentcare, and insured through Securian Canada. We verify your coverage before treatment to minimize upfront costs. The MSA plan features a pay-direct system that allows for immediate verification at our office, meaning the insurer pays their portion right away and you only cover the remaining balance, if any.
Redeemer University
Student Health PlanRedeemer mandates health insurance for all students, but dental coverage is often more focused. We will perform an eligibility check on your specific health card to see if you have dental riders. If your plan is limited to emergency benefits, we can still provide routine care and give you a detailed "superbill" to submit to a private or parental insurance plan for reimbursement.
Columbia International College
Peak BenefitsThe Peak Student Benefits plan is primarily an international health plan that strictly covers emergency care (such as accidental injury or acute pain relief) rather than routine cleanings or checkups. We can bill Peak directly for qualifying emergencies, but for routine maintenance, we provide full receipts for your personal records.

How Student Dental Plans Actually Work
Student plans look like ordinary dental insurance but behave differently in four ways, and each of them decides whether you get value from the fee you have already paid.
1. The year runs September to August, not January to December
Employer plans usually reset on 1 January. The McMaster MSU and GSA plans and the Mohawk MSA plan run from 1 September to 31 August. Your annual maximum and your cleaning and examination allowances reset on 1 September, so the time to use them is before the end of August. Reading week, the gap after exams in April and the summer are the easiest times to fit a visit in.
2. You are enrolled automatically, and the fee is already paid
Eligible full time students are enrolled and charged through their fees. For McMaster undergraduates that means full time students registered in 18 or more units across the Fall and Winter terms. Opting out is only possible during the change of coverage window, which for September starts closes at the end of September, and it needs proof of other coverage. If you did not opt out, the plan is yours for the year and not using it simply loses the money.
3. There is an annual maximum, and it is modest
Student plans pay a percentage of eligible fees up to a yearly ceiling. The McMaster GSA plan, for example, pays 70 percent up to $750 a benefit year. That comfortably covers an examination, a cleaning and a filling or two. It will not cover a crown and a root canal in the same year, which is why a problem found early is so much cheaper than one left until it hurts.
4. You may be covered twice
Many students under 25 are also covered as a dependant on a parent's workplace plan. When that happens your own student plan normally pays first and the parent's plan can pick up some of the remainder. Tell us about both plans at your first visit and we will submit to each in the right order, which often reduces what you pay to very little.
Student Plans and the Canadian Dental Care Plan
The federal Canadian Dental Care Plan is only for people with no access to private dental coverage, and the Government of Canada lists coverage through a student organization as private coverage. If you are enrolled in a student plan, even one you have never used, you are generally not eligible for the CDCP. If you opted out of your student plan and have no other coverage, the CDCP may apply, depending on income.
